Substrate Cleaning

Substrate cleaning is the preparation of a material surface by removing contaminants that could interfere with subsequent engineering processes, such as coating, bonding, deposition, or fabrication. Cleaning works through chemical, physical, or combined mechanisms, including solvent dissolution, aqueous removal, abrasion, ultrasonic agitation, or plasma treatment, depending on the substrate and contaminant. Effective cleaning can improve surface energy, adhesion, coating uniformity, and process reliability, while minimizing defects caused by oils, particles, oxides, or residues. Engineers select cleaning methods according to material compatibility, contamination type, required surface condition, environmental constraints, and the performance demands of the finished component.

2023

Source: Vy M. Dong and Daniel Kim, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA Organic synthesis is about transforming a readily available reagent into a more valuable product. Having clean glassware is crucial for the efficiency of this process. Dirty glassware can potentially affect the reaction and make isolation of the final product more challenging. Thus, a synthetic chemist must keep the glassware spotless. The methods described here will detail different glass cleaning...

Keeping the microscope optics clean is important for high-quality imaging. Dust, fingerprints, excess immersion oil, or mounting medium on or in a microscope causes reduction in contrast and resolution. DIC is especially sensitive to contamination and scratches on the lens surfaces. This protocol details the procedure for keeping the microscope clean.

Cleaning, Sterilization, and Disinfection

Cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization are the methods that help to break the infection chain and prevent disease. Cleaning The cleaning process usually involves using water with detergents or enzymatic cleaner and removing foreign material from objects and surfaces, including organic material such as body fluids or inorganic material like soil. Cleaning is performed before high-level disinfection and sterilization because foreign materials on the cover of the devices interfere with process...

Protein phosphorylation is a central feature of how cells interpret and respond to information in their extracellular milieu. Here, we present a high throughput screening protocol using kinases purified from mammalian cells to rapidly identify kinases that phosphorylate a substrate(s) of interest.

Selective Cleaning of Caenorhabditis Worms for Enrichment of Intestinal Microbiota

Source: Morgan, E., et al. Selective Cleaning of Wild Caenorhabditis Nematodes to Enrich for Intestinal Microbiome Bacteria. J. Vis. Exp. (2021)This video demonstrates a protocol for isolating intestinal bacteria of interest from wild Caenorhabditis worms. The worms are first starved and washed to eliminate residual feeding bacteria from their surface and intestinal lumen while preserving the target microbes. After surface cleaning and multiple crawling steps, the worms are dissected to extract...
