Vortex Flow

Vortex flow is fluid motion in which particles follow curved or spiral paths around a central axis, creating organized rotation that matters in engineering because it shapes pressure, velocity, and energy distribution. It develops when angular momentum is introduced or conserved: in a forced vortex, external torque makes fluid rotate with angular velocity, whereas in a free vortex, tangential velocity increases toward the center as angular momentum is conserved, producing a radial pressure gradient. Engineers use vortex flow in pumps, turbines, cyclone separators, combustors, mixers, and flow meters to manage transport, enhance separation or mixing, and predict loads and losses.

Flow Visualization in a Water Tunnel: Observing the Leading-edge Vortex Over a Delta Wing

2023

Source: Jose Roberto Moreto, Gustaaf Jacobs and Xiaofeng Liu, Department of Aerospace Engineering, San Diego State University, San Diego, California The delta wing, shown in Figure 1D, is a popular design in high-speed airplanes due to its superb performance in transonic and supersonic flight regimes. This type of wing has a small aspect ratio and high sweep angle, which reduces drag at high subsonic, transonic and supersonic flight regimes. The aspect ratio is defined as the wing span divided...

Implementation of a Hyperbolic Vortex Plasma Reactor for the Removal of Micropollutants in Water

2025

This study presents the methodology for the generation of six different types of plasma discharges within a Hyperbolic Vortex Plasma Reactor for the degradation of micropollutants in water, including pharmaceuticals and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Microscale Vortex-assisted Electroporator for Sequential Molecular Delivery

2014

A microfluidic vortex assisted electroporation platform was developed for sequential delivery of multiple molecules into identical cell populations with precise and independent dosage control. The system’s size based target cell purification step preceding electroporation aided to enhance molecular delivery efficiency and processed cell viability.

We present a protocol for manipulation of individual vortices in thin superconducting films, using local mechanical contact. The method does not include applying current, magnetic field or additional fabrication steps.

Noninvasive Determination of Vortex Formation Time Using Transesophageal Echocardiography During Cardiac Surgery

2018

We describe a protocol to measure vortex formation time, an index of left ventricular filling efficiency, using standard transesophageal echocardiography techniques in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. We apply this technique to analyze vortex formation time in several groups of patients with differing cardiac pathologies.
