Discharge Rate Scaling

Discharge rate scaling is the engineering analysis of how the rate at which a fluid, gas, or stored medium leaves a system changes with size, geometry, and operating conditions. It uses conservation laws, dimensional analysis, and similarity principles to relate discharge across systems while accounting for driving pressure or head, flow resistance, and relevant material properties. Engineers apply these relationships when translating laboratory measurements to full-scale equipment, comparing designs, and predicting performance in pipes, channels, tanks, pumps, and process systems. Accurate scaling supports reliable sizing, energy assessment, safety evaluation, and optimization when direct full-scale testing is impractical.

Qualitative and Quantitative Validation of Tools with Rating Scales Aimed at Assessing the Quality of University Service-Learning

2025

This paper outlines the protocol for qualitatively and quantitatively validating a university service-learning instrument, following the parsimony criterion to create the most robust and optimal version possible. The Delphi qualitative validation method and Robust Unweighted Least Squares Exploratory Factor Analysis, as a quantitative item optimization method, are utilized for this purpose.

Mass Conservation and Flow Rate Measurements

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the calibration of a flow passage as a flowmeter using a control volume (CV) formulation [1, 2]. The CV analysis focuses on the macroscopic effect of flow on engineering systems, rather than the detailed description that could be achieved with a detailed differential analysis. These two techniques should be...
