Htc Biochar

HTC biochar is a carbon-rich material produced from wet biomass through hydrothermal carbonization (HTC), a process that converts organic residues into a more stable carbon form without energy-intensive drying. In a sealed reactor, water-rich feedstock is heated under pressure, typically at temperatures below those used in conventional pyrolysis, and hydrolysis, dehydration, and decarboxylation transform the biomass into a solid hydrochar. In environmental research, HTC biochar can support organic-waste management, soil amendment, nutrient retention, and carbon storage, although its properties depend on feedstock and processing conditions. Characterizing its stability, contaminants, and interactions with soil helps assess its use in circular resource systems.

A novel Upflow Anaerobic Solid State (UASS) reactor was used for biogas production from fibrous feedstock. Digestate from UASS reactor was hydrothermally carbonized into HTC biochar in a pressurized batch reactor. The integration of the two bioenergy concepts was applied in this study to increase overall bioenergy production.
