Organic Flocculation

Organic flocculation is a water and wastewater treatment process that uses carbon-based flocculants to gather finely dispersed particles into larger, separable aggregates. In the treatment stream, organic polymers or naturally derived coagulants interact with particle surfaces through charge neutralization and polymer bridging; gentle mixing promotes collisions and floc growth, allowing the resulting flocs to settle or be removed by filtration. The process can reduce suspended solids, colloids, color, and some associated contaminants, supporting clarification and downstream treatment. Its performance depends on factors such as coagulant dose, pH, mixing conditions, and particle characteristics, making optimization important for efficient, lower-residue environmental treatment.

The interaction and sedimentation of the clay and bacterial cells within the marine realm, observed in natural environments, can be best investigated in a controlled lab environment. Here, we describe a detailed protocol, which outlines a novel method for measuring the sedimentation rate of clay and cyanobacterial floccules.

Virus concentration from environmental water and wastewater samples is a challenging task, carried out primarily for the identification and quantification of viruses. While several virus concentration methods have been developed and tested, we demonstrate here the effectiveness of ultrafiltration and skimmed milk flocculation for RNA viruses with different sample types.

Organic Compounds

All living things are formed mostly of carbon compounds called organic compounds. The category of organic compounds includes both natural and synthetic compounds that contain carbon. Although a single, precise definition has yet to be identified by the chemistry community, most agree that a defining trait of organic molecules is the presence of carbon as the principal element, bonded to hydrogen and other carbon atoms. However, some carbon-containing compounds such as carbonates, cyanides, and...

Mendelian Genetics Evolution is caused by changes in the genetic composition of populations. In the field of population genetics, scientists model this process as changes in the frequency of alleles at individual genetic loci. This simple representation of how evolution occurs dates to Gregor Mendel’s analysis of trait inheritance patterns in pea plants, first presented in 1865. Mendel determined, using rigorous collection of data, that noticeable traits are controlled by two alleles of each...
