Microplastic Sampling

Microplastic sampling is the systematic collection of small plastic particles from environmental media such as seawater, freshwater, sediments, soil, or air to determine their abundance, distribution, and characteristics. Sampling typically uses size-selective nets, pumps, filters, or sediment collection methods, followed by controlled storage, contamination prevention, and laboratory analysis using visual, spectroscopic, or chemical techniques. Standardized sample volumes, locations, and particle-size ranges improve comparability among studies and help distinguish spatial or temporal patterns. In environmental research, these data support pollution monitoring, source assessment, risk evaluation, and the design of strategies to reduce plastic inputs into ecosystems.

Most microplastic research to date has occurred in marine systems where suspended solid levels are relatively low. Focus is now shifting to freshwater systems, which may feature high sediment loads and floating debris. This protocol addresses collecting and analyzing microplastic samples from aquatic environments that contain high suspended solid loads.
