Stepwise Warming

Stepwise warming is an experimental approach that raises temperature in discrete, controlled increments to examine how organisms, ecosystems, or environmental processes respond to thermal change. Researchers apply each temperature step for a defined period, allowing measurements of physiological, behavioral, biochemical, or ecological responses before increasing the temperature again. This design helps distinguish gradual acclimation from threshold effects and identifies conditions at which performance declines or stress responses emerge. In environmental research, stepwise warming supports studies of climate-change impacts, thermal tolerance, species distribution, ecosystem function, and the capacity of biological systems to adapt to progressively warmer conditions.

The gradient echo memory is a protocol for storing optical quantum states of light in atomic ensembles. Quantum memory is a key element of a quantum repeater, which can extend the range of quantum key distribution. We outline the operation of the scheme when implemented in a 3-level atomic ensemble.

Here we present a time-lapse morphometric protocol to follow the intensity of blastocyst shrinkage and re-expansion during previtrification interventions and post-warming recovery. The application of the protocol is possible in in vitro fertilization laboratories equipped with time-lapse microscopes and is recommended in the development of an optimal blastocyst vitrification method.

Exp., (2017)This video demonstrates a two-step ultracentrifugation method using sucrose gradients and cushions to purify and concentrate viral particles from cell culture supernatant. The procedure enables separation based on buoyant density, allowing recovery of intact virus suitable for downstream applications.
