Acoustic Analysis

Acoustic analysis is the measurement and interpretation of sound waves to characterize biological structures, functions, or disorders, making it a valuable noninvasive approach in medicine. Sensors or microphones capture signals such as speech, breathing, or heart sounds, while computational methods quantify features including frequency, amplitude, duration, and spectral patterns to identify changes from expected physiology. These measurements support assessment of voice disorders, respiratory conditions, cardiac function, swallowing, and other clinical processes, often complementing physical examination and imaging. As signal processing and machine learning advance, acoustic analysis may enable more objective screening, longitudinal monitoring, and accessible point-of-care diagnostics.

In this video we first describe fabrication and operation procedures of a surface acoustic wave (SAW) acoustic counterflow device. We then demonstrate an experimental setup that allows for both qualitative flow visualization and quantitative analysis of complex flows within the SAW pumping device.

Activating Molecules, Ions, and Solid Particles with Acoustic Cavitation

Acoustic cavitation in liquids submitted to power ultrasound creates transient extreme conditions inside the collapsing bubbles, which are the origin of unusual chemical reactivity and light emission, known as sonoluminescence. In the presence of noble gases, nonequilibrium plasma is formed. The "hot" particles and the photons generated by collapsing bubbles are able to excite species in solution.

2011

Habituation and prepulse inhibition of startle are operational measures of sensory gating. Sensory gating is disrupted in schizophrenia, and some other mental disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. We here describe a standard protocol to assess short-term and long-term habituation as well as prepulse inhibition of acoustic startle responses in rats and mice.
