Acute Lung Re-ventilation

Acute lung re-ventilation is a clinical strategy for restoring airflow and gas exchange in lung regions that have become poorly ventilated or collapsed, helping correct hypoxemia and atelectasis. It typically uses controlled increases in inspiratory airway pressure, followed by appropriate positive end-expiratory pressure, to reopen alveoli and maintain their patency while clinicians monitor oxygenation, ventilation, and hemodynamic responses. In medicine, this approach may be used after anesthesia, one-lung ventilation, airway obstruction, or other acute causes of regional lung collapse. Careful adjustment is essential because excessive pressure can impair circulation or contribute to ventilator-induced lung injury.

Non-Invasive Endotracheal Administration of Lipopolysaccharide to Induce Acute Lung Injury in Rodents

2025

In this study, a non-invasive endotracheal instillation technique is demonstrated to develop ALI in rats using a basic laryngoscope to ensure precise LPS delivery to the lungs. The LPS is instilled via an endotracheal tube using a laryngoscope. The magnitude of lung injury is evaluated at multiple time points.

This protocol describes the development of a neonatal piglet model of acute lung injury that models early pathogenic events occurring in the preterm lung, including sub-adequate surfactant quantity, hyperoxia, high-pressure ventilation, and inflammation, to facilitate understanding of molecular triggers of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and enhance therapeutic translation.

(2018)This video demonstrates an in vivo mouse model for inducing and analyzing acute lung injury (ALI) using intraperitoneal administration of bacterial lipopolysaccharide. The inflammatory cascade triggered by alveolar macrophages and neutrophils leads to epithelial and endothelial barrier disruption, allowing fluid and immune cells to accumulate in the alveoli. This study describes a model of acute lung injury following visceral ischemia-reperfusion during supra-celiac aortic cross-clamping via laparotomy in rats. It enables the investigation of both the clinical and biological effects of aortic clamping as well as the impact of ischemia-reperfusion on underlying organs and remote lung injuries.
