Adolescent Endometriosis

Adolescent endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory condition in which endometrium-like tissue grows outside the uterus, often causing significant menstrual and pelvic pain in teenagers. This tissue responds to ovarian hormones, especially estrogen, and undergoes cyclical changes that can trigger local inflammation, bleeding, scarring, and pain. Recognizing endometriosis during adolescence helps clinicians distinguish persistent dysmenorrhea from common menstrual discomfort and guides evaluation through medical history, examination, imaging, and, when needed, laparoscopy. Early treatment can reduce symptoms, limit disruption to school and daily life, and support long-term reproductive and pelvic health.
