Biliary Radiofrequency Ablation

Biliary radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive endoscopic technique that applies controlled thermal energy to diseased tissue within the bile ducts, particularly in malignant biliary obstruction. An intraductal radiofrequency catheter delivers alternating electrical current, producing localized heating that causes coagulative necrosis while limiting injury to surrounding structures. The treated area can then be drained with a biliary stent, helping restore bile flow and potentially prolong stent patency. Used in palliative management of unresectable biliary cancers and selected strictures, this method supports tissue ablation, symptom relief, and improved biliary drainage, while ongoing research evaluates its effects on survival and treatment outcomes.

To help assess the molecular mechanisms underlying zebrafish biliary-driven liver regeneration, we established a liver injury model in which the nitroreductase-expressing hepatocytes are genetically ablated upon metronidazole treatment. In this protocol, we describe how to adeptly manipulate, monitor and analyze hepatocyte ablation and biliary-driven liver regeneration.

This study utilized advanced informatics techniques to compare procedure duration in patients undergoing radiofrequency atrial ablation treated with active esophageal cooling to those treated with traditional luminal esophageal temperature monitoring. Contextual inquiry, workflow analysis, and data mapping were utilized. The findings demonstrated reduced procedure time and variability with active cooling.
