Catheter-based Interventions

Catheter-based interventions are minimally invasive medical procedures that use thin, flexible tubes to diagnose or treat conditions without open surgery. Clinicians guide a catheter through blood vessels or other anatomical pathways, often using imaging, to deliver instruments, medications, energy, or implants at a targeted site. These interventions support procedures such as vascular treatment, cardiac repair, tissue sampling, and drainage, potentially reducing tissue disruption, recovery time, and procedural risk compared with conventional surgery. Their precision and adaptability make them important in modern medicine, while ongoing advances in imaging, catheter design, and robotic guidance continue to expand their clinical applications.

Peripheral Intravenous Catheter Insertion

2023

Source: Madeline Lassche, MSNEd, RN and Katie Baraki, MSN, RN, College of Nursing, University of Utah, UT The purpose of peripheral intravenous catheter (PIV) insertion is to infuse medications, perform intravenous (IV) fluid therapy, or inject radioactive tracers for special examination procedures. Placing a PIV is an invasive procedure and requires the use of an aseptic, no-touch technique. Common IV venipuncture sites are the arms and hands in adults and the feet in children. According to...

Catheter-based Endovascular Angioplasty for Fibrosing Mediastinitis-associated Pulmonary Vein Stenosis

2025

Pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS) is a life-threatening complication of fibrosing mediastinitis (FM), with a poor prognosis if not properly treated. Currently, catheter-based endovascular angioplasty is a promising therapeutic strategy for FM-associated PVS. This protocol primarily outlines a stepwise approach to the transcatheter procedure for FM-associated PVS.

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Monitoring Animals for Signs of Pain and Distress Recognizing early signs of pain is essential for ethical animal research. Animals are routinely monitored using behavioral, physical, and physiological parameters that reflect...
