Functional Organ Recovery

Functional organ recovery is the restoration of an organ’s physiological activity after injury, disease, surgery, or temporary loss of function, and it is a central goal of medicine. Recovery depends on adequate blood flow and oxygen delivery, cellular repair, resolution of inflammation, and reestablishment of coordinated tissue processes that support normal performance. Clinicians assess progress through organ-specific biomarkers, imaging, physiological measurements, and changes in symptoms, while treatments may address the underlying cause and support damaged tissues during repair. Understanding these mechanisms informs rehabilitation, critical care, transplantation, and regenerative medicine, while helping researchers distinguish reversible dysfunction from permanent organ damage.

2016

We developed a real-time mirror robot system for functional recovery of hemiplegic arms using automatic control technology, conducted a clinical study on healthy subjects, and determined tasks through feedback from rehabilitation doctors. This simple mirror robot can be applied effectively to occupational therapy in stroke patients with a hemiplegic arm.

Olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) are neural crest cells which allow growth of the primary olfactory neurons. This specific property can be used for cellular transplantation. We present here a model of cellular transplantation based on the use of OECs in a laryngeal nerve injury model.

Contrast enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging allows comprehensive in vivo assessment of the heart in small animal models of cardiovascular disease. Here we detail the procedures to perform CMR imaging, reconstruction and analysis using Small Animal Lock-Locker Inversion Recovery (SALLI) in rats.

We present the high-temperature synthesis of intermetallic precursors K4Ge9, their dissolution in ethylenediamine to form Ge94- deltahedral Zintl ions, and the reaction of the clusters with alkynes to form organo-Zintl ions. The latter are characterized by electrospray mass spectrometry in solutions and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction in the solid state.
