Lumbar Spine Fusion

Lumbar spine fusion is a surgical procedure that permanently joins two or more vertebrae in the lower back to stabilize the spine and reduce pain or abnormal motion. Surgeons remove or prepare the affected disc or joint, place bone graft or a bone-forming substitute between the vertebrae, and often use screws, rods, or plates to maintain alignment while new bone bridges the segment. The procedure may treat conditions such as spinal instability, deformity, fractures, recurrent disc disease, or nerve compression associated with degeneration. By restoring structural support, lumbar fusion can improve function, although it reduces motion at the fused level and requires substantial healing.

2025

This video describes the technique of intrathecal placement of a lumbar drain in a porcine ischemic model, which helps in draining the cerebrospinal fluid to a drainage system. The cerebrospinal fluid pressure is monitored by the drainage system, and fluid is drained to maintain a constant cerebrospinal fluid pressure.
