Motor Function Assessment

Motor function assessment is the systematic evaluation of movement, muscle performance, coordination, balance, and functional mobility to identify neurological or musculoskeletal impairment. Clinicians examine features such as muscle strength, tone, reflexes, range of motion, gait, and task performance, often comparing sides of the body or using standardized rating scales to detect altered motor control. These findings help localize dysfunction within the nervous or musculoskeletal systems, establish a baseline, and monitor change over time. In medicine, motor assessments support diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation, and outcome evaluation for conditions including stroke, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s disease, and peripheral nerve disorders.

2025

This video demonstrates the staircase test to assess motor function in a hemiparkinsonian rat with a right brain lesion. The lesion disrupts dopamine signaling, impairing left paw control, which results in more pellets remaining on the left stairs, indicating motor dysfunction.

Assessing Motor Function in an Experimental Autoimmune Neuritis Mouse Model

This video demonstrates the process of assessing motor dysfunction in a mouse model through the administration of Pertussis toxin and an inoculum containing myelin-mimicking peptides and adjuvants, followed by treadmill tests to assess motor function and evaluate the resulting nerve damage due to immune activation and demyelination.

Functional and Morphological Assessment of Diaphragm Innervation by Phrenic Motor Neurons

Compound muscle action potential recording quantitatively assesses functional diaphragm innervation by phrenic motor neurons. Whole-mount diaphragm immunohistochemistry assesses morphological innervation at individual neuromuscular junctions. The goal of this protocol is to demonstrate how these two powerful methodologies can be used in various rodent models of spinal cord disease.

Monitoring brain activity during upright motor tasks is of great value when investigating the neural source of movement disorders. Here, we demonstrate a protocol that combines functional near infrared spectroscopy with continuous monitoring of muscle and kinematic activity during 4 types of motor tasks.
