Myositis

Myositis is a group of disorders characterized by inflammation and injury of skeletal muscle, often causing progressive weakness, pain, and reduced physical function. In many forms, an abnormal immune response targets muscle fibers, triggering inflammatory-cell infiltration, tissue damage, and release of muscle enzymes such as creatine kinase into the blood; infections, medications, and other conditions can also cause muscle inflammation. In medicine, clinicians combine symptoms with enzyme testing, autoantibody analysis, electromyography, magnetic resonance imaging, and sometimes muscle biopsy to establish the diagnosis. Treatment may include corticosteroids, immunosuppressive therapy, management of the underlying cause, and rehabilitation to preserve mobility and strength.
