Pre-sensitized Mice

Pre-sensitized mice are laboratory animals whose immune systems have been deliberately primed with a defined antigen or allergen before experimental testing, creating a controlled model of heightened immune responsiveness. Sensitization typically involves prior exposure that activates antigen-specific adaptive immunity, so a later challenge can produce measurable responses such as antibody production, inflammatory signaling, or tissue changes. In medicine, these models help researchers investigate allergy, hypersensitivity, immune-mediated disease, and potential treatments under reproducible conditions. By linking an initial immune exposure to outcomes after re-challenge, pre-sensitized mice support studies of disease mechanisms, therapeutic efficacy, and safety while reducing variability between experimental subjects.

This article describes the 4 Mountains Test (4MT), a hippocampus-dependent test of working allocentric spatial memory. The hippocampus is affected early in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and this article outlines the 4MT methodology and results of patient testing, which demonstrates the value of the 4MT in the diagnosis of pre-dementia AD.

Loss of the righting reflex has long served as a standard behavioral surrogate for unconsciousness, also called hypnosis, in laboratory animals. Alterations in volatile anesthetic sensitivity caused by pharmacological interventions can be detected with a carefully controlled high-throughput assessment system, which may be adapted for delivery of any inhaled therapeutic.
