Myopia Risk

Myopia risk is the likelihood that a person will develop myopia, a refractive condition in which distant objects appear blurred because light focuses in front of the retina. Risk reflects interactions among inherited susceptibility, ocular growth, and environmental exposures; excessive axial elongation of the eyeball is the central structural change, while limited outdoor time and sustained near-work demands may contribute. Assessing myopia risk through family history, eye examinations, and changes in refractive error helps clinicians identify children who may benefit from monitoring and early management. Understanding these factors supports prevention strategies and may reduce progression toward high myopia and associated retinal complications.

Source: Jiang, X., et al. Inducement and evaluation of a murine model of experimental myopia. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates a procedure for inducing myopia in a mouse through the installation of a custom lens frame. The frame is secured to the exposed skull with dental adhesive, and concave lenses are inserted to shift the focal point behind the retina. This setup stimulates eyeball elongation leading to myopia.

We demonstrate the effect of scleral crosslinking with riboflavin and UVA on an axial elongation rabbit eye. Axial elongation was induced in 13 day-old New Zealand rabbits (male and female) by suturing their right eye eyelids (tarsorrhaphy).

Marketing Myopia

Marketing myopia is a concept that highlights the shortsightedness of businesses when they focus too narrowly on their products or services rather than understanding and addressing the broader needs and wants of their customers. In order to avoid marketing myopia, businesses should adopt a customer-centric approach, continually adapt to evolving...

Systematic risk is inherent to the market and reflects the impact of economic, financial, and geopolitical factors. It affects the entire market rather than specific stocks or industries. This type of risk is unavoidable and cannot be mitigated through diversification. Market risk refers to the possibility that the overall stock market will decline, impacting the value of all investments. This risk is often driven by macroeconomic factors such as economic recessions, financial crises, or global...
