Rolling Velocity Measurement

Rolling velocity measurement is the quantitative assessment of how quickly a cell or particle moves while rolling along a surface, a parameter that helps characterize motion in biological systems. In medical research, it commonly uses time-lapse microscopy or video imaging to track a moving object, measure the distance traveled over a defined interval, and calculate velocity as distance divided by time; image analysis can distinguish rolling from stationary or freely flowing motion. Measuring leukocyte rolling along vascular endothelium supports studies of cell adhesion, inflammation, and microcirculation. The approach also enables comparison of how molecular interactions, vessel conditions, or treatments alter cellular behavior.

2015

Ultrasound velocimetry is used to study mixing by fluid flow in liquid metal electrodes. The focus of this manuscript is to illustrate the methods used for making precise, spatially-resolved ultrasound measurements while limiting oxidation and controlling and monitoring temperature, applied current, and the heater power being supplied.

A Low-Cost Apparatus for Measuring Muscle Force–Velocity Relationships

2026

An accessible, low-cost apparatus for measuring human muscle force–velocity–power relationships was developed using inexpensive materials, a 3D-printed gear, a smartphone accelerometer, and Python freeware. Validation against a gold-standard ergometer demonstrated physiologically relevant measurements while providing equitable, hands-on learning opportunities in an undergraduate classroom setting.

Automated Measurement of Microcirculatory Blood Flow Velocity in Pulmonary Metastases of Rats

A method is presented to measure microcirculatory blood flow velocity in pulmonary cancer metastases of the pleural surface in rats in an automated fashion, using closed-chest pulmonary intravital microscopy. This model has potential to be used as a widespread tool to perform physiologic research on pulmonary metastases in rodents.

Micro-particle Image Velocimetry for Velocity Profile Measurements of Micro Blood Flows

Micro-particle image velocimetry (μPIV) is used to visualize paired images of micro particles seeded in blood flows which are cross-correlated to give an accurate velocity profile. Shear rate, maximum velocity, velocity profile shape, and flow rate, each of which has clinical applications, can be derived from these measurements.
