Synovectomy

Synovectomy is a surgical procedure that removes inflamed, hypertrophied, or diseased synovium, the tissue lining a joint, tendon sheath, or bursa. It works by excising this abnormal lining, either through open surgery or minimally invasive arthroscopy, thereby reducing the production of inflammatory mediators and limiting persistent swelling, pain, and tissue damage. In medicine, synovectomy may help manage inflammatory arthritis, recurrent bleeding into a joint, and selected proliferative synovial disorders when medication is insufficient. The procedure can improve joint function and provide tissue for pathological analysis, while its benefits depend on the underlying disease and the extent of synovial involvement.
