Oddi's Sphincter Preservation

Oddi's sphincter preservation refers to protecting the muscular valve that controls the release of bile and pancreatic secretions into the duodenum while limiting the backflow of intestinal contents. The sphincter normally maintains basal pressure and relaxes in response to coordinated signals, including cholecystokinin, allowing secretions to enter the intestine during digestion. In medicine, preservation guides biliary surgery and endoscopic management by favoring techniques that avoid unnecessary sphincter injury or division. Maintaining this function can support normal ductal drainage, reduce reflux-related complications, and inform treatment choices for gallstone disease and other disorders of the biliary and pancreatic ducts.

Innovative Strategies for Organ Preservation in Heart Transplantation: Uniform Cooling Preservation and Ex-situ Normothermic Perfusion

2025

Donor heart preservation is a major determinant of success in heart transplantation. Technological advances have led to optimizing the conditions of preservation, along with a more accurate assessment of the donor heart before transplantation. We herein describe two innovative technologies currently applied for cardiac preservation: uniform cooling preservation and normothermic ex-situ heart perfusion.

Regulating Temperature in the Lab: Preserving Samples Using Cold

2023

Preservation of laboratory samples, specimens, and reagents using extreme cold is routinely performed in biomedical research labs. This video will discuss some of the methods for keeping laboratory samples cold and will explain the correct cooling method to use for each experimental requirement. For example, cooling agents, such as ice and dry ice, are typically used when keeping samples cold during experiments. This video discusses the physical properties of the most commonly used cooling...

Pasteurization and Food Preservation

2026

Pasteurization is a widely employed thermal processing technique designed to enhance the safety and shelf life of perishable food and beverages. By subjecting products to specific high temperatures for controlled durations, this method effectively inactivates pathogenic microorganisms and spoilage enzymes without significantly compromising sensory qualities. The technique has been pivotal in food safety management, especially for consumables susceptible to microbial contamination such as milk,...

Principles of Food Preservation

2026

Food spoilage results from microbial growth, enzymatic activity, and environmental factors that gradually degrade the sensory, nutritional, and safety qualities of food. Preservation techniques aim to slow or halt these processes to extend shelf life and maintain product quality.A key concept in food microbiology is the microbial growth curve, which includes four phases: lag, exponential (log), stationary, and death. During the lag phase, bacteria adjust to their environment without significant...
