Therapeutic Laparotomy

Therapeutic laparotomy is an open abdominal surgical procedure in which an incision through the abdominal wall provides direct access to treat a diagnosed or strongly suspected intra-abdominal condition. After entering the peritoneal cavity, the surgeon systematically assesses the affected organs and performs definitive treatment, such as controlling hemorrhage, repairing perforation, removing diseased tissue, or relieving obstruction, while managing contamination when necessary. Used in emergencies and selected planned operations, the procedure can address abdominal trauma, peritonitis, ischemia, and complex surgical disease. Its findings guide immediate care and may determine subsequent monitoring, reconstruction, or additional treatment.

2025

The therapeutic index of a drug is a key parameter in pharmacology that quantifies the relative safety of a drug by calculating the ratio between the dose that causes toxicity in half the population (50%) to the dose that proves to be effective for half the population (50%). It provides a spectrum of doses for a particular drug ranging from effective to potentially toxic. To illustrate, consider an anticoagulant agent like warfarin. It possesses a narrow window within its therapeutic index to...
