Blood Flow Measurement

Blood flow measurement is the quantitative assessment of blood movement through vessels, providing information about tissue perfusion and vascular function. In neuroscience, techniques such as Doppler ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, and laser Doppler methods detect blood velocity, volume, or changes in tracer distribution by measuring motion, magnetic signals, radioactive tracers, or light scattering. These measurements help relate cerebral circulation to neural activity, assess blood-brain barrier and vascular responses, and identify abnormalities in conditions such as stroke or other cerebrovascular disorders. Accurate blood flow data also supports brain imaging, clinical diagnosis, and research on neurovascular coupling.

Source: Menezes Forti, R. et al. Real-Time Monitoring of Neurocritical Patients with Diffuse Optical Spectroscopies. J. Vis. Exp. (2020)This video demonstrates the use of Diffuse Correlation Spectroscopy (DCS) to measure cerebral blood flow in humans. It outlines the steps for preparing the system, calibrating the probe, positioning it on the participant’s forehead, acquiring scattered light data, and analyzing intensity fluctuations to interpret blood flow dynamics in the brain.

Micro-particle image velocimetry (μPIV) is used to visualize paired images of micro particles seeded in blood flows which are cross-correlated to give an accurate velocity profile. Shear rate, maximum velocity, velocity profile shape, and flow rate, each of which has clinical applications, can be derived from these measurements.
