Bone Marrow Stromal Cells

Bone marrow stromal cells are nonhematopoietic cells that support the bone marrow microenvironment and can generate or influence several connective-tissue cell types. They respond to local signals and communicate through secreted factors, extracellular vesicles, and cell-to-cell interactions, helping regulate inflammation, tissue maintenance, and repair. In neuroscience, these properties make bone marrow stromal cells useful for studying neuroinflammation, neural injury, and strategies for tissue regeneration. Their ability to modulate immune responses and release neurotrophic signals is being investigated in models of stroke, spinal cord injury, and neurodegenerative disease, although their mechanisms and therapeutic effectiveness remain active research questions.

Isolation and Culture of Bone Marrow Stromal Cells from a Mouse Tibia

2025

In this video, we demonstrate the isolation and culture of bone marrow stromal cells from the long bones of mice. The isolated adherent BMSCs can be used for further analysis.

Generating Schwann Cell-Like Cells from Bone Marrow Stromal Cells

2025

This video demonstrates a method for obtaining Schwann cell-like cells from multipotent bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs). Initially, the BMSCs undergo hypoxia treatment, followed by directed differentiation into neuronal progenitor cells. Subsequently, specific media and culture conditions are employed to induce the transformation of these progenitor cells into Schwann cell-like cells.

In Vitro Mouse Bone Marrow Stromal Cell Differentiation into Adipocytes

2025

This video demonstrates the differentiation of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) into adipocytes. In the two-step process, in the presence of specific growth factors and hormones, undifferentiated BMSCs first differentiate into preadipocytes. The second step involving treatment with glucose and insulin leads to the formation of mature adipocytes with multiple lipid droplets.

G-10 Column Based Leukemia Cell Sorting: A Method to Purify Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Cells from Bone Marrow Stromal Cells

2023

This video describes the separation of acute lymphoblastic leukemia cells from bone marrow stromal cells using gel-type ten cross-linked dextran G-10 columns. This method helps recover the population of tumor cells that have migrated beneath the adherent bone marrow stromal cells generating a "phase dim" tumor cell population.

Bone Marrow Aspiration: A Method to Obtain Bone Marrow to Examine Cell Morphology

2023

This video describes the technique of aspirating bone marrow from iliac spine and smear preparation for biopsy. In the example, we perform bone marrow aspiration from an acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patient and examine the cells to check for measurable residual disease (MRD), an important prognostic biomarker.
