C-fiber Conduction

C-fiber conduction is the transmission of nerve signals through small, unmyelinated sensory fibers, a process central to how the nervous system detects slow, persistent sensations. Because C fibers lack myelin, action potentials propagate continuously along the axonal membrane rather than by rapid saltatory conduction between nodes of Ranvier, producing relatively slow signal velocities. These fibers commonly carry dull or burning pain, warmth, itch, and some visceral sensations from peripheral tissues to the spinal cord and brain. Studying C-fiber conduction helps explain pain physiology, sensory processing, and the effects of analgesic or anesthetic interventions in neuroscience and clinical research.

Here, we present a protocol to fabricate electrospun nanofiber scaffolds with gradated organization of fibers and explore their applications in regulating cell morphology/orientation. Gradients with regard to physical and chemical properties of the nanofiber scaffolds offer a wide variety of applications in the biomedical field.

We describe a relatively rapid (30 min) and realistic method for simultaneously measurement of leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf) and stomatal conductance (gs) for transpiring excised leaves. The method can be modified to measure the light and dehydration responses of Kleaf and gs.

In Vivo Single-Fiber Recording of Sciatic Nerve C-Fibers in Rats

2025

This video demonstrates a single-fiber recording of C-fiber nerve conduction in rats. An anesthetized rat is incised to expose the sciatic nerve, which provides sensory and motor supply to the lower limbs. The individual C-fibers are then exposed. Electrical stimulation is provided using stimulus electrodes implanted in the foot, and a response is recorded from a single nerve fiber.

Tension Test of Fiber-Reinforced Polymeric Materials

2023

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Fiber-reinforced polymeric materials (FRP) are composite materials that are formed by longitudinal fibers embedded in a polymeric resin, thereby creating a polymer matrix with aligned fibers along one or more directions. In its simplest form, the fibers in FRP materials are aligned in an orderly, parallel fashion, thus imparting orthotropic material characteristics, meaning that the material...
