C57 Mice

C57 mice are a widely used family of inbred laboratory mouse strains, especially C57BL/6, valued for their well-characterized genetics and reproducible experimental traits. Their near-homozygous genomes reduce genetic variation between animals, while strain-specific differences in gene expression, sensory function, metabolism, and behavior can shape neural phenotypes and treatment responses. In neuroscience, researchers use C57 mice to study learning and memory, neurodegenerative disease, neural circuits, pain, and the effects of genetic or pharmacological interventions. Careful attention to age, sex, housing, and sub-strain is essential because these factors can influence behavioral and physiological outcomes.

Source: Lee, D. et. al., Modified Experimental Conditions for Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in Mice and Assessment of Hearing Function and Outer Hair Cell Damage. J. Vis. Exp. (2023)This video demonstrates the procedure of noise-induced hearing loss in mice. High-volume sound damages hair cells in the inner ear and disrupts auditory pathways, resulting in hearing impairment.

Source: Zhang, J., et al. P. Dissecting Innate Immune Signaling in Viral Evasion of Cytokine Production. J. Vis. Exp. (2014)This video demonstrates intranasal delivery of murine herpesvirus in mice to induce a lung-specific immune response. Lung tissue is subsequently processed to obtain cytokine-containing supernatants for downstream assessment of host immune responses.
