Cortico-hippocampal Tissue

Cortico-hippocampal tissue comprises interconnected regions of the cerebral cortex and hippocampus that support learning, memory, and related cognitive functions. Its function depends on reciprocal neural communication, in which patterned electrical activity and synaptic plasticity modify connections between cortical and hippocampal circuits. Experimental study of this tissue, including prepared brain sections and cultured neural models, helps researchers examine circuit organization, memory encoding, and information transfer. These approaches also provide valuable systems for investigating neurological disorders, evaluating cellular mechanisms of disease, and testing how structural or functional changes affect cognition.

The purpose of the Specimen Orientation Tag (SpOT) is to function as an orientation tool to aid in individual tissue identification in multi-tissue paraffin blocks. These protocols demonstrate how it is constructed easily from common, low-cost histology materials and serves as a reliable visual marker in paraffin blocks and sections.

Tissues are a group of cells that share a common embryonic origin. Microscopic observation reveals that the cells in a tissue share morphological features and are arranged in an orderly pattern to perform specific functions. From an evolutionary perspective, tissues appear in more complex organisms. Although there are many types of cells in the human body, they are organized into four broad categories of tissues: epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous. Each of these categories is...
