Eye Disk Attachment

Eye disk attachment is a laboratory preparation that secures a developing insect eye imaginal disc to a support for observation or manipulation, making it useful for studying visual-system development. The procedure relies on controlled physical adhesion to immobilize the tissue while preserving its epithelial organization and connections with neighboring neural structures, including the developing optic lobe. In neuroscience, attached eye discs support dissection, culture, fluorescence imaging, and analysis of cell differentiation, pattern formation, and axon guidance. By maintaining tissue architecture during experiments, this approach helps researchers link developmental signals to the formation of neural circuits and visual function.

Attachment

Attachment is vital for infant development, as warm social interactions support growth and well-being. In a classic 1958 study by Harry Harlow, the significance of warmth and comfort in forming attachments was examined. Harlow separated newborn monkeys from their mothers and provided two artificial "mothers": one made of cold wire and the other covered in soft cloth. Despite the wire mother offering food, the infant monkeys preferred the comfort of the cloth mother, demonstrating that physical...

Faraday Disk Dynamo

2023

A Faraday disk dynamo is a DC generator, producing an emf that is constant in time. It consists of a conducting disk that rotates with a constant angular velocity in the magnetic field, perpendicular to the disk's plane. The rotation of the disk causes a change in magnetic flux, which induces an emf, causing opposite charges to develop on the rim and in the center of the disk. The polarity of the induced emf can be determined by the direction of the magnetic field and the direction of the...

Microscopy-Based Evaluation of Bacterial Attachment to Plant Root Surfaces

Source: Matthysse, A. G. Adherence of Bacteria to Plant Surfaces Measured in the Laboratory. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates the evaluation of bacterial attachment to plant roots using phase-contrast microscopy. Root samples from seedlings incubated with bacteria are first mounted to check for free bacteria. The samples are then washed to remove loosely attached bacteria and remounted using a suitable coverslip to prevent damage. Finally, the number of bacteria attached to the root...

Eye-tracking to Distinguish Comprehension-based and Oculomotor-based Regressive Eye Movements During Reading

The method was designed to investigate the role of inhibition of return (IOR) in regressive eye movements during reading. The focus is on differentiating between regressions triggered as a result of comprehension difficulty versus those triggered from oculomotor error, including the role of IOR in the two types of regressions.
