Hip Knee Ankle Angles

Hip, knee, and ankle angles are biomechanical measures that describe the relative positions and movements of the lower-limb joints, providing a quantitative view of posture, gait, and motor coordination. These angles are calculated from the orientation of adjacent body segments and change as muscles, joints, and the nervous system coordinate flexion, extension, and weight transfer. In neuroscience, analyzing joint-angle patterns helps researchers assess motor control, identify movement impairments, and relate neural function to observable behavior. The measurements support studies of walking, balance, rehabilitation, and neurological disorders, while also informing assistive technologies and computational models of human movement.

Source: Robert E. Sallis, MD. Kaiser Permanente, Fontana, California, USA The ankle and foot provide the foundation for the body and the stability needed for upright posture and ambulation. Because of its weight-bearing function, the ankle joint is a common site of injury among athletes and in the general population. Ankle injuries occur as a result of both acute trauma and repetitive overuse (such as running). The ankle is a fairly simple joint, consisting of the articulation between the...

Source: Robert E. Sallis, MD. Kaiser Permanente, Fontana, California, USA The knee is a hinged joint that connects the femur with the tibia. It is the largest joint in the body, and due to its location in the middle of the lower leg, it is subjected to a variety of traumatic and degenerative forces. Examination of the knee can be quite complex, owing to the fact it is an inherently unstable joint held together by various ligaments and supported by menisci, which act as shock absorbers and...

The ankle is formed by the talocrural joint (crural = leg). It consists of the articulations between the talus bone of the foot and the distal ends of the tibia and fibula of the leg. The superior aspect of the talus bone is square-shaped and has three areas of articulation. The top of the talus articulates with the inferior tibia. This is the portion of the ankle joint that carries the body weight between the leg and foot. The sides of the talus are firmly held in position by the articulations...

Oscillation and Reaction Board Techniques for Estimating Inertial Properties of a Below-knee Prosthesis

2014

Body segmental inertial properties are required for inverse dynamics modeling. Using an oscillation and reaction board technique, inertial properties of below-knee prostheses were measured. Using direct measures of prosthesis inertia in the inverse dynamics model of the prosthetic leg resulted in lower magnitudes of resultant joint forces and moments.
