Lumbar Spinal Instability

Lumbar spinal instability is abnormal or excessive movement between the vertebrae of the lower spine, which can disrupt mechanical support and contribute to low back pain. It may arise when intervertebral discs, facet joints, ligaments, or trunk muscles fail to control spinal motion, altering load distribution and sensorimotor coordination. Clinicians and researchers assess instability through patient history, physical examination, movement analysis, and imaging, while neuroscience studies examine how altered proprioception, muscle activation, and pain processing affect spinal control. Understanding these mechanisms supports targeted rehabilitation, including motor-control training and stabilization exercises, and helps guide decisions about further evaluation or treatment.
