Neonatal Rat Eeg

Neonatal rat EEG is a method for recording and analyzing the brain’s electrical activity in newborn rats, providing a window into early neural development and function. Electrodes detect voltage fluctuations generated by synchronized neuronal activity, while changes in waveform, frequency, amplitude, and state-dependent patterns reflect maturation of developing neural circuits. In neuroscience, neonatal rat EEG helps characterize sleep and wake states, examine developmental changes in cortical activity, and assess how injury, drugs, or environmental conditions affect the immature brain. These recordings support research on brain maturation and early-life neurological disorders, while enabling comparisons between normal and disrupted patterns of activity.

Here, we introduce a novel technique designed to record electroencephalography (EEG) in freely moving neonatal epileptic pups and describe its procedures, features, and applications. This method allows one to record EEG for more than 1 week.

Measuring Pain-Evoked Brain Activity in Neonates Using a Flat-Tip Probe Coupled to EEG

2025

This video demonstrates a method for measuring pain-evoked brain activity in infants. It outlines the procedure for positioning electrodes on the infant's head and applying pain stimuli to the infant's hand using a flat-tip probe. The video also shows the EEG recording process to identify brain activity in response to the stimuli.

The isolation of neonatal rat cardiomyocytes is a time consuming and unpredictable procedure. This study describes methods for cryopreservation and thawing of neonatal rat cardiomyocytes that allows for more efficient use of cells. The thawed NRCMs can be used for various experiments without the need for performing isolations each time.

Behavioral testing is the gold standard for determining outcomes following brain injury, and can identify the presence of developmental disabilities in infants and children. Neurodevelopmental reflexes are an early indicator of these abnormalities. A host of easily accomplished developmental reflex tests in the neonatal rodent were developed and described here.
