Network Activity Analysis

Network activity analysis is the study of coordinated activity across neurons, brain regions, or neural circuits to reveal how collective dynamics support brain function. Researchers record signals such as electrophysiological activity or calcium fluctuations, then measure temporal correlations, synchrony, functional connectivity, and network organization using statistical or graph-based methods. In neuroscience, these analyses help link neural population patterns to sensory processing, behavior, learning, and disease-related dysfunction. Comparing network activity across conditions can identify changes in communication, integration, and information flow, supporting the study of circuit mechanisms and the development of biomarkers or interventions for neurological disorders.

The Default Mode Network (DMN) in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE) is analyzed in the resting state of the brain using seed-based functional connectivity MRI (fcMRI).

Measuring the Electrophysiological Activity of Neuronal Networks Using Micro-Electrode Arrays

2025

The video demonstrates how to use a microelectrode array (MEA) to record the electrophysiological activity of neurons derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs). Electrophysiological activity from a multiwell MEA containing a neuron-astrocyte co-culture is recorded to detect action potentials from multiple neurons in the network, confirming the successful differentiation of hiPSCs into neurons.

This video demonstrates establishing a neuron-astrocyte co-culture for recording neuronal network activity. Upon establishing the co-culture of motor neurons and astrocytes on a multi-electrode array (MEA) plate, the synchronous rhythmic electrical activity of the neuronal network was recorded extracellularly using the MEA.
