Neural Response Properties

Neural response properties are the measurable ways neurons and neural circuits react to stimuli, revealing how the nervous system represents and processes information. They arise from interactions among synaptic inputs, membrane excitability, and network connections, which shape firing rate, response timing, receptive fields, selectivity, and adaptation. Researchers characterize these properties using electrophysiological recordings, imaging, and controlled stimulation across sensory, motor, and cognitive contexts. This analysis helps connect cellular mechanisms to behavior, identify altered signaling in neurological disorders, and inform computational models and neurotechnology that decode or modulate neural activity.

Electrophysiological characterization of neuronal responses is important for understanding brain function and for guiding the placement of dyes for pathway tracing. However, many studies are performed in anesthetized animals. To understand brain function without anesthetics, we developed a method to record neuronal response properties and inject dyes in awake mouse.

Iontophoresis of neural agonists and antagonists during extracellular in vivo recordings is a powerful way to manipulate a neuron’s microenvironment. These manipulations can most easily be done via piggy-back multibarrel electrodes. Here we describe how to manufacture them and use them during auditory recordings.
