Neuronal Activity Imaging

Neuronal activity imaging is a set of techniques used to visualize when and where neurons become active, providing a direct view of neural circuit function. It typically relies on fluorescent calcium indicators or genetically encoded voltage sensors that convert changes in intracellular calcium or membrane potential into measurable changes in fluorescence, captured with microscopy during defined stimuli or behaviors. In neuroscience, these methods reveal patterns of neuronal communication across cells, circuits, and brain regions, supporting research on sensory processing, learning, disease mechanisms, and therapeutic effects. Combining activity imaging with behavioral measurements can link cellular dynamics to cognition and action.
