Odor Choice Test

An odor choice test is a behavioral assay that measures an animal’s preference, avoidance, or discrimination between two or more odor sources. In a typical setup, odors are presented in separate chambers or zones, and researchers quantify the animal’s investigation time, entries, or first choice under controlled conditions; these behaviors reflect olfactory detection and the sensory value assigned to each odor. In neuroscience, the method helps link odor-guided behavior with neural processing, including olfactory coding and circuits that regulate attraction or aversion. It is useful for studying sensory perception, learning, memory, social cues, and changes in olfactory function caused by disease or experimental manipulation.

A vertical, T-maze olfactometer is described for assaying the behavioral response of arthropods. The olfactometer allows the experimenter to measure choices performed by test subjects when subjected to two potential odor fields. Both attraction to and repulsion from odorants can be measured with this device.

This manuscript describes a protocol to examine the olfactory system of rodents. The olfactory habituation/dishabituation test will allow investigators to determine whether a mouse habituates to a repeatedly presented odor and whether the mouse demonstrates dishabituation when presented a novel odor.

Here we describe how to optimize the acquired video image for an olfactory magnetic-tether (OMT) apparatus. We also describe two sample experimental protocols for studying visuo-olfactory fusion.

Electrophysiological Recordings from Drosophila Sensilla in Response to Volatile Odorants
