Rat Brain

The rat brain is the central organ of the rat nervous system, integrating sensory information, regulating behavior and physiology, and supporting learning and memory. Its neurons communicate through electrical impulses and chemical synapses, while interconnected regions such as the cortex, hippocampus, hypothalamus, and brainstem coordinate perception, cognition, motivation, and homeostasis. Because rats exhibit measurable behaviors and many conserved neural processes, rat brain studies help researchers investigate neural circuits, development, disease mechanisms, and responses to drugs or environmental conditions. Findings can clarify basic brain function and inform experimental models of neurological and psychiatric disorders, while requiring careful attention to species-specific differences.

This video presents the isolation of microvessels from a rat brain using a combination of density gradient centrifugation and enzymatic digestion mehods. The isolated microvessels can be cultured in a culture flask pre-coated with collagen and fibronectin matrix to obtain endothelial cell colonies.

Assessing Blood-Brain Barrier Integrity in a Laser-Induced Brain Injury Rat Model

Source: Kuts, R. et al. Laser-Induced Brain Injury in the Motor Cortex of Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2020)This video demonstrates assessing blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity following laser-induced brain injury in rats. A tracking dye is injected into the tail vein, allowing it to circulate to the brain and leak into the tissue through the damaged BBB. The brain is then extracted and processed to release the dye. The fluorescence intensity of the dye is measured to quantify the extent of...
