Tracer Distribution Analysis

Tracer distribution analysis is a method for mapping where a labeled substance travels or accumulates within a biological system, making it possible to examine connectivity, transport, or regional activity. In neuroscience, researchers introduce a tracer into a selected brain region, pathway, or compartment and then detect its signal after defined transport or uptake processes, using the resulting spatial pattern to infer movement between structures. Depending on the tracer and detection method, analyses can distinguish anterograde or retrograde pathways, quantify regional distribution, or track delivery across neural tissue. These measurements support studies of neural circuits, neuroanatomy, disease-related transport changes, and targeted therapies.

Presented here is a procedure for reproducible and statistically valid determinations of starch granule size distributions, and for specifying the determined granule lognormal size distributions using a two-parameter multiplicative form. It is applicable to all granule sizing analyses of gram-scale starch samples for plant and food science research.

The efficacy of intramuscular uptake and retrograde transport of molecules to corresponding motor neurons depends on the location of the injection sites with respect to the motor end plates (MEPs). Here, we describe how to locate MEPs on skeletal muscles to optimise retrograde transport of tracers into motor neurons.
