Visual Cortical Networks

Visual cortical networks are interconnected groups of brain regions that transform retinal signals into visual perception, making them central to the study of how the brain represents objects, motion, color, and spatial relationships. Information travels from the retina through the lateral geniculate nucleus to primary visual cortex, while feedforward and recurrent connections link visual areas that progressively integrate specific features and broader scene information. Neuroscientists investigate these networks using neuroimaging, electrophysiology, computational modeling, and lesion studies to relate circuit activity to perception and behavior. This framework supports research on visual disorders, sensory processing, and the organization of large-scale brain networks.

Spontaneous activity of developing neuronal networks can be measured using AM-ester forms of calcium-sensitive indicator dyes. Changes in intracellular calcium, indicating neuronal activation, are detected as transient changes in indicator fluorescence with one- or two-photon imaging. This protocol can be adapted for a range of developmentally-dependent neuronal networks in vitro.

The interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) are the pacemaker cells of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. They form complex networks between smooth muscle cells and post-ganglionic neuronal fibers to regulate GI contractility. Here, we present immunofluorescence methods cross-sectional and whole-mount visualization of murine ICC networks.
