Domes

Domes are curved architectural structures that span open spaces by directing loads through their surfaces to supporting walls, arches, or foundations. Their geometry distributes forces mainly through compression, allowing a dome to cover a large area with relatively little material; ribbed, shell, and geodesic designs modify how stresses are carried and transferred. Physics-based analysis considers curvature, symmetry, material strength, buckling, and external loads such as gravity, wind, and earthquakes. These principles guide the design of observatories, stadiums, roofs, pressure vessels, and protective structures, while illustrating how form influences structural efficiency, stability, and resilience.

Light from astronomical objects must travel through the earth's turbulent atmosphere before it can be imaged by ground-based telescopes. To enable direct imaging at maximum theoretical angular resolution, advanced techniques such as those employed by the Robo-AO adaptive-optics system must be used.

An Alternative and Validated Injection Method for Accessing the Subretinal Space via a Transcleral Posterior Approach

2016

Subretinal injections are the most common technique for delivering large therapeutic agents such as proteins and viral vectors to photoreceptors and the retinal pigment epithelium. An alternative method in mice that successfully targets the subretinal space with minimal collateral damage and fast recovery times is described here.
