Led Directionality

LED directionality describes how a light-emitting diode distributes optical power across angles rather than emitting equally in every direction, an important property for controlling illumination and signal transmission. When current crosses the semiconductor p-n junction, electron-hole recombination produces photons; the LED’s chip geometry, encapsulating package, and lens then shape the emitted beam, often concentrating intensity along a preferred axis. Measuring angular intensity and beam angle helps engineers select LEDs for displays, indicators, focused lighting, and optical communication. Understanding directionality also supports accurate photodetector alignment, uniform illumination, and efficient optical system design.

Directing Effect of Substituents: meta-Directing Groups

2025

Substituents on the benzene ring that direct an incoming electrophile to undergo substitution at the meta position are called meta directors. All meta directors either have a positive charge on the atom directly bonded to the ring or a partial positive charge. These groups function by withdrawing electrons from the ring through inductive and resonance effects. Consider the carbocation intermediates formed upon the addition of an electrophile on nitrobenzene at the ortho, meta, and para...
