Polar Dielectric

A polar dielectric is an insulating material whose molecules possess permanent electric dipole moments, making its polarization behavior important in electrostatics, materials physics, and electronic devices. When an external electric field is applied, these molecular dipoles tend to rotate toward the field, while induced polarization may also contribute; thermal motion and molecular structure limit complete alignment. This field-dependent polarization increases the material’s relative permittivity and affects how it stores and transmits electrical energy. Polar dielectrics are therefore relevant to capacitors, insulating layers, dielectric spectroscopy, and the design of optical and electronic materials.

Dielectric Polarization in a Capacitor

2025

The presence of a dielectric medium in a capacitor not only changes the voltage and capacitance but also affects the electric field. In general, dielectrics can be of two types: polar and nonpolar. In a polar dielectric, the positive and negative charges in the molecules are separated by a distance and hence have a permanent dipole moment. In contrast, no such charge separation exists in a nonpolar dielectric, however the nonpolar molecules get polarized in the presence of an external electric...

2014

Horizontal and vertical electrohydrodynamic liquid bridges are simple and powerful tools for exploring the interaction of high intensity electric fields and polar dielectric liquids. The construction of basic apparatus and operational examples, including thermographic images, for three liquids (e.g., water, DMSO, and glycerol) is presented.

Capacitor With A Dielectric

2023

Parallel plate capacitors consist of two conducting plates separated by a certain distance. However, it is mechanically difficult to hold the large plates parallel to each other without actual contact. Hence, a dielectric layer is commonly placed between the plates, which provides an easy solution for holding the plates together with a small gap and increases the capacitance of the capacitor. Dielectrics are non-conducting materials with no free or loosely bound electrons. When a dielectric is...

Using Microwave and Macroscopic Samples of Dielectric Solids to Study the Photonic Properties of Disordered Photonic Bandgap Materials

2014

Disordered structures offer new mechanisms for forming photonic bandgaps and unprecedented freedom in functional-defect designs. To circumvent the computational challenges of disordered systems, we construct modular macroscopic samples of the new class of PBG materials and use microwaves to characterize their scale-invariant photonic properties, in an easy and inexpensive manner.

This manuscript shows the fabrication process for the manufacture of dielectric elastomer soft actuators based on silicone membranes. The three key stages of production are presented in detail: blade casting of thin silicone membranes; pad printing of compliant electrodes; and the assembly of all the components.
