Light Therapy

Light therapy is the controlled use of specific light exposure to influence biological rhythms, mood, and behavior, making it an important noninvasive approach in psychology and mental health research. Bright light entering the eyes activates melanopsin-containing retinal cells, which signal the brain’s suprachiasmatic nucleus, the central circadian clock, and can shift melatonin timing and sleep-wake patterns. Clinicians and researchers use timed light exposure to address seasonal affective disorder, circadian rhythm disruptions, and some sleep-related difficulties. Its effects also help clarify how environmental cues regulate emotion, cognition, and daily functioning, while ongoing research examines its role alongside established psychological and behavioral interventions.

Intense pulsed light with the Optical Pulse Technology platform has US Food and Drug Association approval for the management of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)-associated Dry Eye Disease (DED) by improving meibomian gland function and reducing inflammation. Radiofrequency treatments result in meibum melting. Combination therapy may offer superior outcomes for DED and MGD.

Light as Energy

2019

The energy required to carry out photosynthesis is light— typically electromagnetic radiation from the sun. The range of all possible wavelengths is known as the electromagnetic spectrum. Photons A photon is a discrete electromagnetic particle or bundle of energy. Photons are characterized by their frequency, wavelength, and amplitude, similar to the properties of a wave. Waves with higher frequencies transmit more energy and have shorter wavelengths than longer wavelengths that transmit less...

Method for the Assessment of Effects of a Range of Wavelengths and Intensities of Red/near-infrared Light Therapy on Oxidative Stress In Vitro

Non-coherent Xenon light was passed through narrow-band interference and neutral density filters to deliver light of varying wavelength and intensity to cultured cells. This protocol was used to assess the effects of red/near-infrared light therapy on production of reactive species in vitro: no effects were observed using the tested parameters.
