Mean

The mean is a measure of central tendency that summarizes a set of numerical values with a single representative average. To calculate the arithmetic mean, add all observations and divide the total by the number of observations, giving each value equal weight; this makes the result sensitive to unusually large or small values. In statistics, the mean helps describe datasets, compare groups, estimate population characteristics from samples, and support analyses such as hypothesis testing and regression. Interpreting it alongside the median, spread, and data distribution provides a more complete understanding of variation and reduces the risk of misleading conclusions.
