Question 1

What is the main difference between GNI and GDP?

Accepted Answer

GNI measures total income earned by a country's residents regardless of location, while GDP measures the value of goods and services produced within a country's borders. The key distinction is ownership versus geographic location. GNI focuses on who earns the income, whereas gross domestic product focuses on where production occurs. This difference matters significantly in globalized economies with substantial cross-border income flows.

Question 2

How is GNI calculated from GDP?

Accepted Answer

GNI equals GDP plus net income from abroad. Net income from abroad is calculated by subtracting income earned by foreigners within the country from income earned by residents from foreign sources. This adjustment accounts for cross-border income flows from investments and employment overseas, aligning the measure with ownership rather than geographic location.

Question 3

Why does a U.S. company's factory output in Germany count differently for GNI and GDP?

Accepted Answer

The factory's output contributes to Germany's GDP because production occurs within German borders. However, profits earned by the American company count toward U.S. GNI because the income goes to American residents. This illustrates how GDP tracks production location while GNI tracks income ownership, reflecting each country's economic resources.

Question 4

What does net income from abroad include?

Accepted Answer

Net income from abroad consists of income earned by a country's residents from foreign investments and employment overseas, minus income earned by foreign residents within the domestic economy. This includes wages earned by expatriate workers, investment returns, and profits from overseas operations. It captures all cross-border income flows that distinguish GNI from GDP.

Question 5

How does a foreign engineer's salary affect U.S. GDP and GNI differently?

Accepted Answer

A foreign engineer's output while working in the U.S. contributes to U.S. GDP because production occurs within U.S. territory. However, her salary does not count toward U.S. GNI because the income is earned by a non-resident and ultimately attributed to her home country. This demonstrates how GNI reflects the economic resources available to a country's residents.

Question 6

Who are considered residents for GNI measurement purposes?

Accepted Answer

Residents include individuals, businesses, and institutions with their primary economic interest within a country, even if they temporarily live or operate abroad. This definition ensures that GNI captures income earned by all entities with economic ties to the country, regardless of physical location. It enables accurate measurement of resources available to a nation's economic stakeholders.

Question 7

Why is GNI more relevant than GDP for some countries?

Accepted Answer

GNI provides a more accurate representation of economic resources available to a country's residents, especially for nations with substantial income flows from foreign investments and expatriate labor. In globalized economies where capital and labor frequently cross borders, GNI better reflects the actual income earned by residents than gross domestic product alone.
