Question 1

How does endogenous growth theory differ from neoclassical growth models?

Accepted Answer

Endogenous Growth Theory argues that economic growth originates from within through innovation and human capital investment, unlike the neoclassical growth model, which assumes technology arrives externally. Endogenous theory emphasizes deliberate R&D spending, education, and knowledge creation as growth drivers. This shift from viewing technology as exogenous to treating it as an endogenous outcome fundamentally changed how economists understand long-term prosperity.

Question 2

What role does human capital play in endogenous growth?

Accepted Answer

Human capital—skills, education, and knowledge—is central to endogenous growth. When workers gain education or firms invest in training, they generate new ideas and improve productivity. Robert Lucas emphasized that a better-educated workforce drives continuous growth by creating and adopting innovations. This focus on people and their capabilities distinguishes endogenous theory from models emphasizing only physical capital or natural resources.

Question 3

What are knowledge spillovers and why do they matter for economic growth?

Accepted Answer

Knowledge spillovers occur when innovations by one company benefit others without reducing the original idea's value. Ideas are non-rival—many people can use them simultaneously. Paul Romer showed that when firms invest in research and development, the resulting knowledge spreads throughout the economy, boosting overall productivity. These spillovers create positive externalities that sustain long-term growth beyond what traditional capital investment alone could achieve.

Question 4

How can government policy support endogenous growth?

Accepted Answer

Governments boost endogenous growth by investing in education, funding research institutions, and protecting intellectual property rights. These policies create conditions for innovation and knowledge creation. The U.S. example demonstrates this: laws like the Morrill Land-Grant Acts expanded practical education, universities generated skilled workers and technologies, and strong IP protections encouraged R&D investment. Smart policy transforms the economy into an innovation engine.

Question 5

Why is the Internet a good example of endogenous growth in action?

Accepted Answer

The Internet exemplifies endogenous growth because its development generated countless new business opportunities without diminishing its value. Once created, countless firms used it simultaneously, each benefiting from the same innovation. This demonstrates knowledge spillovers: one major technological breakthrough created positive externalities across the entire economy, enabling new industries and productivity gains that sustained growth for decades.

Question 6

What did Paul Romer contribute to endogenous growth theory?

Accepted Answer

Paul Romer demonstrated that company investments in research and development create new knowledge benefiting the entire economy. He emphasized that knowledge is non-rivalrous, meaning many people can benefit from the same idea simultaneously. Romer's work showed how intentional R&D spending, rather than external technological shocks, drives sustained economic growth through knowledge creation and spillovers.

Question 7

How does learning-by-doing contribute to endogenous growth?

Accepted Answer

Learning-by-doing, introduced by Kenneth Arrow, suggests that productivity improves as workers gain experience and skills through practice. This mechanism means growth emerges from within the economy as people learn and innovate on the job. Unlike external technological progress, learning-by-doing is an internal process where accumulated experience and knowledge continuously enhance worker productivity and economic output.
