Jednym z kluczowych wyzwań stojących przed roślinami jest utrzymanie odpowiedniego nawodnienia. Woda jest krytycznym zasobem, od którego zależą w procesie fotosyntezy, wsparcia strukturalnego oraz transportu składników odżywczych i innych ważnych cząsteczek. Jednym ze sposobów, w jaki rośliny mogą kontrolować swój bilans wodny, jest regulacja procesu znanego jako transpiracja, który jest zasadniczo parowaniem wody z nadziemnych części rośliny. Ta utrata wody następuje przede wszystkim z porów na liściach zwanych aparatami szparkowymi. Ale jak woda się tu dostaje? 

Aby odpowiedzieć na to pytanie, przyjrzyjmy się bliżej ziemi. Tutaj woda dostaje się do korzeni roślin przez osmozę, a następnie przemieszcza się aż do liści przez tkankę naczyniową zwaną ksylemem. Ten kanał wodny jest znany jako strumień transpiracji. Takie rośliny, jak na przykład taro, często rozwijają liście o dużej powierzchni, które zwiększają ich zdolność do przechwytywania światła w celu napędzania fotosyntezy. Rośliny te mają również dużą gęstość aparatów szparkowych w porównaniu z roślinami z suchych siedlisk, co pozwala im utrzymać wysokie tempo fotosyntezy i wspierać duże liście i łodygi.

Wszystkie żywe organizmy muszą wykonywać zestaw podstawowych funkcji, aby się utrzymać. Jeden z tych procesów polega na transporcie materiałów w całym organizmie. Dlatego organizmy muszą wymieniać się materiałami ze środowiskiem, co można zaobserwować w małej skali komórek transportujących między sobą białka i inne materiały lub na większą skalę, taką jak obieg wody, gdzie woda stale porusza się na, nad i pod powierzchnią Ziemi. W obu przykładach przemieszczanie się materiałów z jednego obszaru do drugiego jest procesem dynamicznym regulowanym zarówno przez zmienne środowiskowe, jak i biologiczne.

<h4>Transpiracja: Siła napędowa transportu wodnego</h4>

Rośliny naczyniowe, od najmniejszych paproci po gigantyczne sekwoje Kalifornii, transportują wodę i materiały rozpuszczalne w wodzie w całej roślinie za pomocą systemu wiązek tkanek naczyniowych, które biegną od korzeni do końcówek rośliny. W szczególności woda i składniki odżywcze są wchłaniane przez włośniki i przenoszone przez osmozę do ksylemu rośliny, jednego z dwóch dużych systemów naczyniowych występujących w roślinach. Woda jest następnie transportowana do najwyższego punktu rośliny i na zewnątrz do liści, gdzie zachodzi fotosynteza. Co ciekawe, tylko 1% wody pobieranej przez rośliny jest wykorzystywane do fotosyntezy. Pozostałe 99% wody nie jest bezpośrednio wykorzystywane przez roślinę i jest tracone z rośliny w wyniku parowania lub gutacji, znanej również jako transpiracja. Parowanie to ruch wody do powietrza, przy czym gutacja odnosi się w szczególności do wydzielania kropelek wody z porów roślin. Oba procesy w połączeniu składają się na transpirację w roślinach.

Liście roślin odgrywają ważną rolę w uwalnianiu produktów ubocznych fotosyntezy przez aparaty szparkowe, które są otworami umożliwiającymi wymianę materiałów między rośliną a atmosferą. Aparaty szparkowe są otoczone komórkami ochronnymi, które regulują, kiedy aparaty szparkowe otwierają się i zamykają. Jest to miejsce aktywne, w którym większość wody jest tracona w wyniku parowania, a także miejsce, w którym gazy są wymieniane z atmosferą. Chociaż na pierwszy rzut oka może się wydawać, że utrata wody w wyniku parowania przez zakład jest złą strategią, jest to nieuniknione, aby utrzymać transport materiałów i wody w zakładzie, jednocześnie maksymalizując dopływ gazu. Te różnice między gatunkami roślin, a także podobieństwa między daleko spokrewnionymi gatunkami roślin, kształtują się z czasem w drodze ewolucji, a dokładniej przez selekcję narzuconą przez roślinożerców, zapylacze i inne czynniki klimatyczne i środowiskowe. Dlatego na różnice w szybkości transpiracji wpływa zarówno środowisko, jak i sam gatunek rośliny. Głównymi czynnikami środowiskowymi, które wpływają na szybkość transpiracji, jest temperatura. Wyższe temperatury zwiększają szybkość transpiracji, ponieważ woda jest szybciej tracona w wyniku parowania. Rośliny żyjące w gorącym środowisku są podatne na utratę większej ilości wody niż rośliny znajdujące się w chłodniejszym klimacie. Czynniki takie jak dostępność wody, wiatr, światło słoneczne i inne również wpływają na szybkość transpiracji roślin.

Rośliny żyjące w gorącym i suchym środowisku mają specyficzne adaptacje, które pomagają im kontrolować utratę wody, takie jak zdolność do magazynowania lub oszczędzania wody. Grupa roślin w tych środowiskach, znana również jako metabolizm kwasu gruboszowego lub rośliny CAM, wyewoluowała strategie, takie jak otwieranie aparatów szparkowych do wymiany gazowej tylko w nocy, aby zmniejszyć utratę wody1. Niektóre inne cechy roślin charakterystyczne dla suchych środowisk to zmniejszona powierzchnia liści, mniej aparatów szparkowych lub włoski na liściach w celu oszczędzania wody. Istnieje jednak kompromis między ograniczeniem utraty wody a optymalnym tempem transpiracji potrzebnym do fotosyntezy. Szybkość fotosyntezy odnosi się do tempa wzrostu rośliny i pozyskiwania energii, co jest związane z szybkością pobierania i utraty wody, dlatego niezwykle ważne jest, aby rośliny były w stanie zrównoważyć ten kompromis. Z drugiej strony, w środowiskach, w których woda nie jest zasobem ograniczającym, takich jak tropikalne lasy deszczowe, rośliny stoją w obliczu różnych presji selekcyjnych, które powodują różnice w tempie transpiracji. W tych środowiskach dobór naturalny może zamiast tego faworyzować gatunki roślin, które mogą szybciej transportować wodę, aby wyrosnąć z konkurencyjnych sąsiadów lub urosnąć wystarczająco wysoko, aby uniknąć zjedzenia przez roślinożerców.

<h4>Ocena współczynników transpiracji</h4>

Szybkość transpiracji można ocenić pośrednio za pomocą potometru, który jest urządzeniem mierzącym szybkość pobierania wody przez roślinę liściastą. Założeniem pomiaru potometrem jest to, że transpiracja spowoduje pobór wody, której ilość można określić ilościowo. Ponadto naukowcy mogą określić względne tempo transpiracji roślin, obserwując struktury liści, takie jak rozmiary i liczba aparatów szparkowych na jednostkę powierzchni.

Badanie wskaźników transpiracji roślin może nauczyć nas nie tylko, w jaki sposób rośliny przystosowują się do różnych środowisk, ale może również dostarczyć informacji o tym, jak najlepiej uprawiać rośliny w różnych warunkach środowiskowych, aby zwiększyć produkcję żywności i dostosować nasze wykorzystanie roślin do przystosowania się do globalnych zmian klimatycznych i wzrostu populacji. Na przykład tempo transpiracji jest zmieniane przez globalne ocieplenie i inne przyczyny i może wpływać na globalny obieg wody, co z kolei może wpływać na ekosystemy, a także na populacje ludzkie2. W związku z tym zrozumienie tych zmian byłoby niezbędne do opracowania strategii zaradczych w zakresie ich negatywnych skutków. Co więcej, badanie szybkości transpiracji różnych upraw może pomóc w identyfikacji upraw o wysokiej efektywności wykorzystania wody, aby zwiększyć produkcję żywności na jednostkę wody i zmniejszyć potrzebę nawadniania3.

Water movement in plants depends on transpiration and the vascular system. Plants must move water and dissolved nutrients from the roots to the leaves. They also exchange materials with the environment as part of normal life processes.

Vascular plants use bundles of tissues that run from the roots to the tips of the plant. Root hairs absorb water and nutrients, and osmosis moves water into the xylem, the main water-conducting tissue. Water then travels to the tallest parts of the plant and into the leaves, where photosynthesis takes place. Only about 1% of the water taken up is used for photosynthesis, while the rest is lost from the plant.

That water loss happens through evaporation and guttation, and together these processes are called transpiration. Evaporation moves water into the air. Guttation is the release of water droplets from plant pores. Most water is lost from leaves through stomata, which are openings that also allow gas exchange with the atmosphere.

Stomata are bordered by guard cells, which control when the openings open and close. This makes the leaf the main site for both water loss and gas exchange. Although water loss may seem harmful, it helps keep water moving through the plant while still allowing carbon dioxide and oxygen to move in and out.

Transpiration creates a lower water concentration in the leaf, which lowers osmotic potential there. Water potential is the free energy of water, and water moves from areas of higher water potential to areas of lower water potential. As evaporation increases in the leaf, water is pulled upward from the roots and stem toward the leaves.

Cohesion and adhesion help make this movement possible. Cohesion is the attraction between water molecules, and adhesion is the attraction between water and other materials, such as xylem walls. When water molecules leave through the stomata, they pull more water molecules behind them, which keeps the flow moving toward the areas of lower water potential.

Transpiration rate changes with both the plant and the environment. Temperature is the main environmental factor, and higher temperatures usually increase transpiration because evaporation happens faster. Water availability, wind, sunlight, and other conditions also affect how quickly water is lost.

Plants in hot, dry environments often have adaptations that reduce water loss. Some CAM plants, or Crassulacean acid metabolism plants, open their stomata at night to limit water loss. Other arid-environment traits include smaller leaf surface area, fewer stomata, and hairs on leaves. These features help conserve water, but they also create a tradeoff because plants still need enough transpiration for photosynthesis and growth.

In wet environments such as tropical rainforests, water is less limiting. In those settings, natural selection may favor plants that move water quickly so they can grow faster than nearby plants or grow tall enough to avoid herbivores. Differences in transpiration rates therefore reflect both environmental pressures and plant species traits.

Scientists can estimate transpiration rates with a potometer, a device that measures water uptake in a leafy plant. The idea is that transpiration drives the water uptake that the potometer records. Researchers can also compare plants by looking at leaf features such as stomata size and number per unit area.

Studying transpiration helps explain how plants adapt to different environments. It can also guide crop growth under changing climate conditions and rising food demands. Transpiration affects the global water cycle, ecosystems, and human populations, so understanding it can support better water use and crop breeding. Plants with high water-use efficiency may help increase food production per unit of water and reduce the need for irrigation.
