Measuring Biodiversity

Aby chronić różnorodność biologiczną, naukowcy muszą być w stanie ją zmierzyć. Oznacza to ustalenie, ile różnych gatunków żyje razem w danej przestrzeni. Jaki jest wygodny sposób liczenia gatunków? 

Próba policzenia wszystkiego w całym ekosystemie byłaby niemożliwa, więc naukowcy używają narzędzia zwanego kwadratem, które jest ramką o ustalonym rozmiarze umieszczoną losowo w środowisku, w którym należy przeprowadzić liczenie. Po skatalogowaniu gatunków i osobników znalezionych w tym małym przekroju, proces ten powtarza się, umieszczając losowo więcej kwadratów lub alternatywnie w ustalonych pozycjach wzdłuż linii biegnącej przez środowisko, zwanej transektem.

Aby następnie oszacować całkowitą liczbę gatunków na danym obszarze, stosuje się krzywe akumulacji gatunków. Podsumowując trzy rodzaje różnorodności biologicznej, możemy spojrzeć na nie w ten sposób: alfa, beta i gamma. Oprócz rejestrowania różnorodności, naukowcy często odnoszą się do równości gatunków, co oznacza, ile osobników każdego typu jest obecnych. Na przykład te dwa stanowiska mają takie samo bogactwo lub różnorodność alfa, ponieważ oba mają siedem gatunków. Jednak obszar A jest stosunkowo opanowany przez króliki z niewielką liczbą innych gatunków, podczas gdy obszar B ma dość równomierne rozmieszczenie gatunków, więc uważa się, że ma większą równość w porównaniu z obszarem A. Naukowcy ogólnie uważali ekosystemy o większym bogactwie i równości, tj. wiele równomiernie rozmieszczonych gatunków, za najzdrowsze. Czasami na danym obszarze jest zbyt wiele gatunków, że nierealne jest liczenie każdego gatunku z osobna. Na przykład jedno drzewo w amazońskim lesie deszczowym może zawierać setki gatunków chrząszczy. Aby obejść ten problem, ekolodzy używają narzędzi do pobierania próbek zwanych kwadratami. Kwadrat to po prostu rama o znanym obszarze wewnętrznym. Na przykład, aby zmierzyć bogactwo gatunkowe jednoakrowego pola trawy, ekolodzy losowo umieszczają kwadrat na polu i liczą gatunki w kwadracie, zamiast liczyć wszystkie gatunki w obrębie akra. Różnorodność gamma (γ) to liczba gatunków na wielu obszarach połączonych w region. Korzystając z tych pomiarów, biolodzy mogą zorientować się w różnorodności w przestrzeni, w tym zarówno w małej, jak i dużej skali.

<h4>Zagrożenia dla różnorodności biologicznej i ich konsekwencje</h4>

Różnorodność biologiczna na całym świecie jest zagrożona przez zanieczyszczenia, zmiany klimatyczne i gatunki inwazyjne. Głównym powodem działań na rzecz utrzymania różnorodności biologicznej jest funkcjonowanie ekosystemów. Ekosystemy składają się z wielu części roboczych, w tym producentów pierwotnych, roślinożerców, mięsożerców i detrytusożerców, z których wszystkie przyczyniają się do funkcjonowania ekosystemu. Jeśli gatunki zostaną utracone, ekosystem może się załamać. A jeśli ekosystem się załamie, usługi, które zapewnia ludziom, również się załamią. Tropikalne rafy koralowe są dobrym przykładem tej koncepcji1. Skoki temperatury wody powodują, że koralowce tracą swoje symbiotyczne komórki glonów. Bez glonów koralowce zaczynają głodować, umierać, a następnie ulegać degradacji i tracić swoją strukturę. Kiedy koralowce ulegają rozkładowi, nie stanowią już schronienia dla ryb, a liczebność gatunków ryb spada, co z kolei wpływa na lokalnych rybaków i ludzi, którzy polegają na rybach jako źródle pożywienia. Z biegiem czasu martwe rafy koralowe ulegają degradacji na większą skalę i nie stanowią już bufora dla sąsiednich linii brzegowych, ostatecznie powodując erozję wybrzeża i niszcząc wyspy. Wysoce zróżnicowana społeczność jest mniej narażona na upadek z powodu redundancji funkcjonalnej2. Na przykład koralowce mogą różnić się wrażliwością na wysokie temperatury. Jeśli jeden koralowiec jest wyjątkowo wrażliwy na temperaturę, inny może zająć swoje miejsce w społeczności, ale jeśli jest tylko kilka gatunków, jest mniej prawdopodobne, że taki substytut będzie dostępny.

Znaczna liczba leków, z których korzystamy, jest bezpośrednim wynikiem różnorodności życia. Leki, które obecnie syntetyzujemy, były kiedyś izolowane ze zwierząt, roślin, grzybów i bakterii. Istnieje cały przemysł zajmujący się odkrywaniem nowych potencjalnych leków poprzez skanowanie różnych gatunków pod kątem obecności związków bioaktywnych. Na przykład rośliny wytwarzają chemikalia do obrony przed infekcjami i roślinożercami. Pająki i węże wytwarzają różnorodne jady. Obie klasy organizmów są źródłem ważnych leków, takich jak Taxol z cisów, który leczy raka piersi, płuc i jajników, czy Ohanin z jadu kobry królewskiej, który jest środkiem przeciwbólowym3-4. Każdy gatunek, który wyginie, może być kluczem do leczenia obecnie nieuleczalnych chorób. Im szybciej stracimy te gatunki, tym mniejsza szansa na znalezienie rozwiązań.

Gdy jakiś gatunek wyginie, nigdy nie będziemy w stanie ich doświadczyć. Ten rodzaj myślenia napędzał ochronę pand, wydr morskich i innych charyzmatycznych zwierząt. Gatunki te nazywane są gatunkami flagowymi, a ich ochrona może skutkować ochroną różnorodności biologicznej. Mimo że zwierzęta te stanowią tylko niewielką część całego ekosystemu, ich ochrona oznacza ochronę ekosystemu, który zamieszkują. Wysiłki mające na celu uratowanie wydry morskiej na zachodnim wybrzeżu Ameryki Północnej zaowocowały zdrowymi lasami wodorostów, w których żyje wiele tysięcyinnych gatunków5. Bez ochrony wydr morskich roślinożercy, tacy jak jeżowce, które są zwykle zjadane przez wydry, są w stanie całkowicie pochłonąć lasy wodorostów, pozostawiając jałowe skały, w których bardzo niewiele gatunków mogłoby przetrwać.

Biodiversity matters because it helps keep ecosystems healthy and stable. Biodiversity is the variety of living organisms in an ecosystem, and it can be measured at the genetic, species, community, and ecosystem levels. Ecologists often focus on species richness, which is the total number of different species in a local community. They also consider evenness, which describes how similar the abundances of those species are.

A community with many species is not always the most diverse if one species dominates. When species are more evenly distributed, biodiversity is higher than in a community where rare species make up only a small part of the total. Biologists can compare communities with rank-abundance curves. A flat curve shows high evenness, while a curve that drops quickly shows low evenness. If richness and evenness both differ, ecologists use equations to calculate diversity, although there is still debate about which equation works best.

Counting every organism is often impossible. A single tree in the Amazon Rainforest may hold hundreds of beetle species. To estimate biodiversity, ecologists use quadrats, which are frames with a known area. They place quadrats randomly in a field or along transects, which are tapes stretched across an area so samples can be taken at regular intervals. This approach helps cover the site while making the survey practical.

Even with quadrats and transects, rare species can be missed. Ecologists use species accumulation curves to track the total number of species found as more quadrats are sampled. The curve rises as new species appear and eventually approaches an asymptote, which gives an estimate of the total number of species in the area. If the asymptote is not fully reached, scientists can still estimate how many species are likely present.

Biologists also compare diversity across space with alpha, beta, and gamma diversity. Alpha-diversity is the number of species in one area. Beta-diversity compares two areas and includes the species unique to each one. Gamma-diversity measures the number of species across many areas in a region. Together, these measures show diversity at small and large scales.

Biodiversity is threatened by pollution, climate change, and invasive species. Ecosystems depend on many working parts, including primary producers, herbivores, carnivores, and detritivores. If species are lost, the ecosystem can collapse, and the services it provides to people can disappear too. Coral reefs show this clearly. When water temperatures rise, corals lose their symbiotic algae cells, then starve, die, and lose their structure. Fish lose cover, fish numbers decline, fishermen are affected, and damaged reefs can no longer protect coastlines from erosion.

High biodiversity can make a community more resistant to collapse because of functional redundancy. If one coral species is very sensitive to heat, another may be able to fill its role. With only a few species, that backup is less likely. Biodiversity also supports medicine. Many medicines were first isolated from animals, plants, fungi, and bacteria. Scientists continue to search species for bioactive compounds, such as Taxol from yew trees for cancer treatment and Ohanin from king cobra venom as a painkiller. Each extinct species may remove a possible source of future cures.

Conservation often focuses on flagship species such as pandas and sea otters. Protecting these animals can also protect the ecosystems they live in. On the West Coast of North America, efforts to save sea otters helped keep kelp forests healthy and full of many other species. Without otters, sea urchins can overgraze kelp forests and leave barren rocks with very few species able to survive.
