Kohezja to tendencja tego samego typu cząsteczek do sklejania się ze sobą w wyniku sił międzycząsteczkowych.
Cząsteczki wody są spoiste ze względu na ich polarność i zdolność do tworzenia wiązań wodorowych. Atom tlenu z częściowym ładunkiem ujemnym w jednej cząsteczce wody może związać się z atomem wodoru z częściowym ładunkiem dodatnim w innej cząsteczce wody, tworząc wiązanie wodorowe.
Każda cząsteczka wody może tworzyć do czterech wiązań wodorowych z innymi cząsteczkami wody.
Cząsteczki wody grupują się razem, tworząc kropelki. Cząsteczki na powierzchni są wystawione na działanie powietrza, ale są bardziej przyciągane do siebie niż do cząsteczek w powietrzu.
Silniejsze przyciąganie do innych cząsteczek wody ze względu na wiązania wodorowe tworzy przyciąganie do wewnątrz, co generuje napięcie powierzchniowe.
Dzięki temu zjawisku powierzchnia wody może być odporna na pękanie. Z tego powodu małe obiekty wydają się unosić na wodzie, a małe owady mogą chodzić po wodzie, o ile nie łamią sił spójnych działających na powierzchnię.

Kohezja to przyciąganie między cząsteczkami tego samego typu, takimi jak cząsteczki wody. Cząsteczki wody mają ogólny ładunek obojętny, ale są cząsteczkami polarnymi. Atom tlenu w jednej cząsteczce wody ma częściowy ładunek ujemny, który może związać się z atomem wodoru mającym częściowy ładunek dodatni w drugiej cząsteczce wody, tworząc wiązanie wodorowe. Każda cząsteczka wody może utworzyć do czterech wiązań wodorowych z innymi cząsteczkami wody. Wiązania wodorowe odpowiadają za spójność wody.

Kiedy na powierzchni wiele cząsteczek wody łączy się w wyniku kohezji, powstaje kropla. Woda zazwyczaj nie rozprzestrzenia się po powierzchni, ponieważ cząsteczki wody są bardziej przyciągane do siebie niż do cząsteczek tworzących powierzchnię lub otaczające powietrze. Przyciąganie pomiędzy cząsteczkami wody na powierzchni a wodą w masie nazywa się napięciem powierzchniowym.

Napięcie powierzchniowe wynika ze spójności. Łyżwiarze stawowi, zwani także nartnikami, to owady wykorzystujące to zjawisko do chodzenia po wodzie. Napięcie powierzchniowe występuje na styku wody i powietrza (tj. na powierzchni wody). Cząsteczki wody na powierzchni oddziałują z sąsiednimi cząsteczkami wody obok i pod nimi. Ponieważ cząsteczki wody powierzchniowej nie mogą tworzyć wiązań wodorowych z innymi cząsteczkami wody po jednej stronie (stronie znajdującej się obok powietrza), tworzą silniejsze interakcje z sąsiednimi cząsteczkami wody. Silnie związane cząsteczki mają skompresowaną powierzchnię, tworząc kuliste kropelki cząsteczek wody. Wysokie napięcie powierzchniowe wody i wyporność nóg łyżwiarza stawowego umożliwiają owadowi utrzymanie się na powierzchni wody.

Rtęć to kolejna spoista ciecz. W szklanym pojemniku rtęć pozostaje w postaci kulistych kropelek, ponieważ siły spójności między cząsteczkami rtęci są silniejsze niż siły przylegania między rtęcią a szkłem. Dla kontrastu, chociaż woda jest wysoce spójna, ma również powinowactwo do krzemionki (głównego składnika szkła). Zatem woda rozprowadza się równomiernie na dnie szklanego pojemnika.

Water molecules stick to each other through cohesion. Water is neutral overall, but it is a polar molecule. The oxygen atom in one water molecule has a partial negative charge, and it can bind with a hydrogen atom that has a partial positive charge in another water molecule. This forms a hydrogen bond. Each water molecule can form up to four hydrogen bonds with other water molecules, and these bonds give water its cohesive nature.

Cohesion helps water form droplets on a surface. Water does not usually spread out because the water molecules are more attracted to each other than to the surface or the air around them. The attraction between water molecules at the surface and the bulk water is called surface tension, and it comes from cohesion. At the water-air boundary, surface molecules can only make hydrogen bonds beside and below them. That limited bonding creates a compressed surface area and spherical droplets.

Surface tension is strong enough to support pond skaters, also called water striders. These insects use the surface of water to walk across it. Their buoyant legs and the high surface tension of water help them stay on top of the water.

Mercury is another cohesive liquid. In a glass container, mercury stays in spherical droplets because the cohesive forces between mercury molecules are stronger than the adhesive forces between mercury and glass. Water is also highly cohesive, but it has an affinity for silica, which is a main component of glass. Because of that, water spreads evenly at the bottom of a glass container.
