Fermentation

Fermentacja to proces, w którym węglowodany są rozkładane na prostsze cząsteczki w warunkach niskiego poziomu tlenu lub beztlenowych.
W fermentacji pirogronian, końcowy produkt glikolizy lub jego pochodne, działają jako końcowe akceptory elektronów. W wyniku fermentacji powstaje mniej cząsteczek ATP niż w wyniku oddychania tlenowego, które wykorzystuje tlen jako końcowy akceptor elektronów.
Fermentacja kwasu mlekowego i etanolu to dwa najczęstsze rodzaje fermentacji.
Fermentacja kwasu mlekowego zachodzi w komórkach mięśniowych w warunkach beztlenowych. Podczas intensywnej aktywności mięśniowej komórki mięśni szkieletowych doświadczają niskiego poziomu tlenu. Enzym dehydrogenaza mleczanowa redukuje pirogronian do mleczanu i utlenia NADH do NAD +.
Natomiast fermentacja etanolowa zachodzi w drożdżach i bakteriach. Pirogronian jest najpierw przekształcany w aldehyd octowy przez dekarboksylazę pirogronianową. Aldehyd octowy jest następnie dalej redukowany do etanolu przez dehydrogenazę alkoholową.
Oba rodzaje fermentacji zapewniają regenerację NAD+, aby można go było ponownie wykorzystać w glikolizie do dalszej produkcji ATP, pomimo warunków niskiego poziomu tlenu.

Fermentacja to rodzaj procesu metabolicznego zachodzącego pod nieobecność tlenu, podczas którego cząsteczki organiczne, takie jak glukoza, są rozkładane w celu wytworzenia energii. Podczas tego procesu cząsteczka glukozy jest początkowo przekształcana w dwie cząsteczki pirogronianu w wyniku szeregu reakcji chemicznych. Proces ten nazywa się glikolizą i przebiega tak samo, jak pierwszy etap oddychania tlenowego. W przypadku braku tlenu cząsteczki pirogronianu są następnie przekształcane w różne cząsteczki organiczne różnymi drogami, w zależności od zaangażowanego organizmu.

Fermentacja alkoholowa jest procesem dwuetapowym. W pierwszym etapie pirogronian przekształca się w dwutlenek węgla i aldehyd octowy. W drugim etapie aldehyd octowy działa jako akceptor elektronów i jest redukowany do etanolu, przy jednoczesnej konwersji NADH do NAD+. Ogólnie rzecz biorąc, fermentacja alkoholowa przekształca pirogronian i NADH w etanol, dwutlenek węgla i NAD+. Fermentation is a metabolic pathway that lets cells make energy without oxygen. It begins after glucose is split into two pyruvate molecules during glycolysis. Glycolysis is the same first step used in aerobic respiration.

When oxygen is unavailable, pyruvate does not enter aerobic respiration. Instead, cells convert pyruvate into other organic molecules through pathways that depend on the organism. A key purpose of fermentation is to regenerate NAD+ from NADH so glycolysis can keep running.

During glycolysis, NAD+ becomes NADH. Fermentation transfers electrons from NADH to an organic molecule, such as pyruvate. This reaction produces a new organic molecule and restores NAD+.

The two main fermentation types are lactic acid fermentation and alcohol fermentation. Lactic acid fermentation occurs in red blood cells, which lack mitochondria, and in skeletal muscles during strenuous exercise. It also happens in certain bacteria, including those found in yogurt. In this pathway, pyruvate and NADH are converted to lactic acid and NAD+.

Alcohol fermentation happens in two steps. First, pyruvate is changed into carbon dioxide and acetaldehyde. Then acetaldehyde accepts electrons and is reduced to ethanol, while NADH becomes NAD+. Overall, alcohol fermentation turns pyruvate and NADH into ethanol, carbon dioxide, and NAD+.

Yeasts use alcohol fermentation to convert sugars into carbon dioxide and ethanol. People harness this process to produce alcoholic beverages such as beer and wine. Fermentation shows how cells can keep making energy when oxygen is limited.

EXPLANATION: Discussions of DNA in earlier grades have been limited to discussions of genes and the role of genes in the appearance and activities of an organism. Biology 1 represents a student's introduction to a molecular model of a DNA as well as the organization of DNA into genes and genes subsequently into chromosomes. Students should address interactions between genes in proteins which regulate both the shape and reproduction of DNA molecules. It is important to note that not all segments of DNA are transcribed for proteins. Portions of DNA are involved in regulating the expression of genes or affect the structure of the chromosomes (replication origin, centromeres, and telomeres).
