Functional Groups

Grupy funkcyjne to kowalencyjnie związane zestawy atomów, które wpływają na właściwości cząsteczki.
Cząsteczki zawierające te same grupy funkcyjne często wykazują podobne właściwości i ulegają podobnym reakcjom.
Nazewnictwo grup funkcyjnych pozwala na szybką identyfikację atomów w cząsteczce, co jest przydatne w chemii organicznej i biochemii. 
Węglowodory są podstawą cząsteczek organicznych i zawierają różną liczbę atomów węgla i wodoru. Należą do nich alkany, alkeny i alkiny. Atomy węgla w alkanach są połączone ze sobą pojedynczymi wiązaniami, podczas gdy alkeny i alkiny zawierają odpowiednio wiązania podwójne lub potrójne.
Węglowodory mogą tworzyć zamknięte pierścienie. Jeśli pierścień zawiera tylko pojedyncze wiązania, nazywa się go cykloalkanem. Jeśli węgle są połączone ze sobą naprzemiennymi wiązaniami pojedynczymi i podwójnymi, nazywa się to pierścieniem aromatycznym lub grupą arylową.
Jedną z najprostszych grup niezawierających węgla jest grupa hydroksylowa, która zawiera atom tlenu i atom wodoru. Jest ważnym składnikiem kilku związków, takich jak metanol, woda i węglowodany.

Każda grupa funkcyjna jest unikalnym układem atomów i ma przypisaną nazwę kombinacji atomów tworzących grupę.

Węglowodory

Silne, stabilne wiązania między atomami węgla tworzą złożone cząsteczki zawierające łańcuchy, rozgałęzienia i pierścienie. Chemia tych związków nazywana jest chemią organiczną. Węglowodory to związki organiczne składające się wyłącznie z węgla i wodoru. Alkany to węglowodory nasycone, czyli zawierające tylko wiązania pojedyncze. Alkeny zawierają jedno lub więcej wiązań podwójnych węgiel-węgiel. Alkiny zawierają jedno lub więcej potrójnych wiązań węgiel-węgiel. Węglowodory aromatyczne zawierają struktury pierścieniowe. Są one również znane jako grupy arylowe.

Alkohole i etery

Wiele związków organicznych, które nie są węglowodorami, można uważać za pochodne węglowodorów. Pochodną węglowodorową można utworzyć poprzez zastąpienie jednego lub większej liczby atomów wodoru w węglowodorze grupą funkcyjną, która zawiera co najmniej jeden atom pierwiastka innego niż węgiel lub wodór. O właściwościach pochodnych węglowodorów decyduje w dużej mierze grupa funkcyjna. Grupa –OH, znana jako grupa hydroksylowa, jest grupą funkcyjną alkoholu. Grupa –R–O–R– to grupa funkcyjna eteru.

Aldehydy, ketony, kwasy karboksylowe i estry

Grupy funkcyjne związane z grupą karbonylową obejmują grupę –CHO aldehydu, grupę –CO– ketonu, grupę –COOH kwasu karboksylowego i grupę –COOR estru. Grupa karbonylowa, podwójne wiązanie węgiel-tlen, jest kluczową strukturą w tych klasach cząsteczek organicznych: aldehydy zawierają co najmniej jeden atom wodoru przyłączony do karbonylowego atomu węgla, ketony zawierają dwie grupy węglowe przyłączone do karbonylowego atomu węgla, kwasy karboksylowe zawierają grupę hydroksylową przyłączoną do karbonylowego atomu węgla, a estry zawierają atom tlenu przyłączony do innej grupy węglowej połączonej z karbonylowym atomem węgla. Wszystkie te związki zawierają utlenione atomy węgla w stosunku do atomu węgla grupy alkoholowej.

Functional groups are the parts of organic molecules that give them specific chemical behavior. They help determine how a compound reacts and what properties it has. In organic chemistry, these groups are used to classify molecules in a clear way.

Hydrocarbons are one common class of organic compounds. They contain only carbon and hydrogen. Alcohols, aldehydes, and ketones are other classes that are identified by their functional groups. These groups make each class behave differently from the others.

Knowing functional groups helps students recognize related compounds and compare their structures. It also provides a simple way to organize many organic molecules into meaningful groups. That makes functional groups an important part of high school chemistry.
